Barbour LIBRARY WINS BUILDING EXCELLENCE AWARD

Pittsburgh Theological Seminary’s Clifford E. Barbour Library was the recipient of a 2020 Master Builders’ Association of Western Pennsylvania Inc.’s Building Excellence Award. During the Evening of Excellence, Feb. 25, 2021, the Library was honored in the category Renovation Construction Between $5 and $10 Million.

“The Seminary community has been so pleased with the renovated building. The light throughout the building is wonderful, the variety of spaces for collaboration and study is amazing, and the attention to aesthetic detail makes it one of the most beautiful libraries I’ve seen. We are very grateful to PJ Dick and LGA Partners for working together to give us this functional and gorgeous place,” said Michelle Spomer, Donald G. Miller Librarian and director of the Clifford E. Barbour Library.

Fully renovated in 2018, the LEED certified Barbour Library offers spaces to foster learning through community, connections, and solitude, and provides access to resources in ways that support present and future research, pedagogy, and practice of theological education. Highlights of the Library include: Fred Rogers Family Room, a study space for students with children; Rossin Writing Lab, where students meet for tutoring and writing assistance from the director of the Center for Writing and Learning Support; Henry Highland Garnet Integrative Learning Space, a creative room bringing together art and ministry; and Active Learning Space, which allows users to stay active while studying.

This project addressed the full range of renovation needs to establish creative spaces that inspire people to engage with theological ideas and each other in community and collaboration; to incorporate innovation that supports theological reflection, inquiry, and research; and to preserve our collection purposefully.

Presented annually, the MBA Building Excellence Awards are the highest and most sought-after commercial construction industry awards in our region. Project architect was LGA Partners LP and contractor was PJ Dick - Trumbull - Lindy Paving.
