Pittsburgh Theological Seminary will join with East End Cooperative Ministry to present the annual Kelso Lecture in Honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Sun., Jan. 15, 2012 at 3:30 p.m. at Temple Sinai. Dr. John Jackson, president of The Schott Foundation for Public Education in Cambridge, Mass. will serve as the keynote speaker. This event is free and open to the public.

Jackson is a noted authority on public education and his thoughts on educational quality and equality are uplifting and vital for our country and congregations. In addition to the message, the service will include varied music from a number of local congregations and enriching worship highlighting MLK’s work. Following the celebration service, there will be refreshments and a question-and-answer session with Dr. Jackson.

In his role as president, Jackson leads the Foundation’s efforts to ensure a high quality public education for all students regardless of race or gender. He joined the Schott Foundation after seven productive years in leadership positions at the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. He served as the NAACP chief policy officer and prior to that as the NAACP’s national director of education. Jackson also served as an adjunct professor of race, gender, and public policy at the Georgetown Public Policy Institute. In 1999, President William Jefferson Clinton appointed Jackson to serve in his administration as senior policy advisor in the Office for Civil Rights at the U.S. Department of Education. Jackson earned his degrees from Xavier University of Louisiana (B.A.), University of Illinois’ College of Education (M.Ed.), and University of Illinois' College of Law (J.D.). In addition, Jackson earned his master of education and doctorate of education in administration, planning, and social policy from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. He served on the Obama-Biden transition team as a member of the President’s 13-member Education Policy Transition Work Group.
