STEP 4 Apply for a Federal Direct Student Loan

After filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, FAFSA, students must submit a Direct Loan Request Form to the Financial Aid Office each year.

New borrowers are required to complete a Direct Loan Master Promissory Note (MPN). The MPN is a legally binding agreement to repay the loan. In most cases, one MPN can be used for loans over 10 years of study. A valid MPN may follow the student through undergraduate and graduate school.

Four Steps for a Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan

  1. File your FAFSA
  2. Submit a Direct Loan Request Form to the Financial Aid Office
  3. Complete a Federal Direct Loan Master Promissory Note
  4. Complete a Federal Direct Loan Entrance Counseling Session
